School Resumed in Disaster Affected Areas

The widespread and enormous damage caused by Typhoon No.19 (Hagibis) has also changed children's lives.

Disaster-affected schools in Miyagi, Fukushima, Iwate, Tochigi, and Ibaraki prefectures resumed classes by October 25 after being closed for two weeks since the onset of the disaster. Four schools affected by the disaster in Nagano also resumed classes by October 28. On the other hand, the Naganuma Elementary School, located closest to the flooded Chikuma River, has not yet been able to resume classes as mud is still being removed by the Self Defense Force (SDF). The students at Naganuma are currently using classrooms at another elementary school 3 km (1.8 miles) away.

"We would like to provide a fun space for children," said well-wishers gathered to host a  basketball game at the Naganuma Elementary School on November 2.

The event was held by an NPO based in Nagano, the Nagano Sport Community Club Tohoku (Supocomi). At one point, there was mud piled up over 10 centimeters (4 inches) deep around the school gymnasium. The Supocomi, members of the PTA, SDF, and volunteers all came together to remove the mud so that the students could enter the gym. However, the floor was ruined from being submerged in mud water for over a week and it was not safe for the students to use.

Following the Supocomi's request, Civic Force donated floor wax and 5 mops for the school gymnasium. Parents and volunteers worked day and night to finish waxing the floors until just before the game date. "We still have to do something about the mud under the floor. But we were able to get a space for the students to exercise for the time being," said Mr. Isao Nagamine who coaches the students.

On the day of the event, volunteers also provided lunch.

At last, the students' voices echoed through the gymnasium for the first time in a while.
