Civic Force has been supporting Kusunoki since November 2021 through the NPO Partner Projects. Established in 2004, Kusunoki is a local volunteer organization rescuing cats.

Kusunoki worked with Civilian Disaster Response Command for Animal Rescue (CDCA) and rescued animals that were left behind in the affected area. To date, they have rescued over 100 animals, mainly cats, and continue to operate three shelters.

Kusunoki is taking care of cats for their owners and also finds them foster homes. There are also cats who lost their owners in the disaster. More than half of the rescued cats seem to be pets and the others are more likely “community cats” - stray cats living in the community. Stray cats are neutered and returned to where they were found.

In recent years, with the frequent occurrence of disasters, there are efforts being made to accommodate evacuees with pets. However, in Atami, many evacuees are staying at local hotels and are unable to bring in their pets due to hygiene concerns.

Ms. Nasu, the head of Kusunoki said, “We were too overwhelmed with rescuing cats and taking care of them to host adoption events.” Civic Force’s NPO Partner Project supports staff salaries and management costs so that Kusunoki can support both regular animal rescue activities and disaster response activities.

The goal is to continue to host bi-monthly adoption events in Tokyo and find homes for 50 cats. Kusunoki is planning on hosting online events to accelerate the adoption operation. Rescued cats are offered safe spaces with food and medical care to stay until adoption. Kusunoki is hoping to raise funds for operating costs by sharing their activities on social media.
