At 2:46PM on March 11, 2011, a deadly earthquake struck Japan. Earthquakes, tsunami, and fires across the Tohoku region devastated 12 prefectures and caused 18,880 deaths and many missing persons.

It has been 11 years since that unforgettable day. Many memorial services were organized by the national government and local municipalities, however, those came to an end after the tenth year and some decided to cancel in the midst of the pandemic.

“There is no end for us to commemorate.”

“Communities need a shared opportunity to pray.”

Local volunteers and organizations continue to host memorial services and provide the space and time to remember their loved ones as it is so important to keep that memory.

For the next ten years

Civic Force began emergency assistance in Tohoku in March 2011. Since then, Civic Force has been supporting reconstruction efforts through NPO Partner Projects. From 2021, Civic Force has supported those memorial events that were impacted by the pandemic.

This year, Civic Force is again supporting memorial services offered by local organizations. Those memorial services used to have donations and volunteers from outside but ever since the pandemic, it has become challenging to rely on those external resources with the economy staggering and prevention controls in place to limit visitors. Funding from the government and private partners has become scarce since the tenth year mark and the local organizations are facing challenges in securing resources.

Local residents are now exploring more self-reliant ways to continue the transition to remember their loved ones and hand off to the next generation.

Civic Force has launched a crowdfunding project to support the local organizations hosting memorial services in Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima prefectures. Memorial services are not only held to remember the people affected but to also share lessons learned.

Civic Force is raising funds for COVID-19 prevention control measures and management fees for the subsequent ten years. Thank you for your support and please keep the affected areas in your thoughts and prayers as we mark the 11th year anniversary.
