On December 20, as part of integrated learning time, 13 second year students of Nakano Middle School researching social contribution activities visited Civic Force’s Tokyo office.

The research aims to encourage each student to think about how to tackle societal challenges. The students collect feedback from organizations working on social contribution activities and ask about their activities. Since the first visit in 2012, students from the middle school have been visiting the office almost every year.

This year, two Civic Force staff members discussed the emergency assistance activities for Typhoon No.19 (Hagibis) and the Great East Japan Earthquake and introduced Civic Force’s role in disaster response.

The students listened to the lecture eagerly and asked questions such as “What motivates you,” “What were the challenges,” and “What can we do?”

They commented, “There have been many disasters this year. I also learned that there is going to be a big disaster in Tokyo in the future. It was interesting,” and “This was an opportunity to think about disasters and disaster preparedness which I normally don’t think about.”

We don’t know when and where disasters strike. Civic Force values opportunities like this for the next generation to think about the importance of disaster preparedness and what each of us can do.
