In response to the new coronavirus outbreak,Airborne Rescue & Relief Operations With Search (ARROWS), comprised of Civic Force and partner organizations, has been providing emergency relief assistance in China.

On January 31, ARROWS will transport medical supplies including N95 masks, protective suits, protective gowns, disposable medical gloves, face covers, medical caps, long boots, dust masks, disinfectants, medical waste bags, and blood collection kits.

A member of ARROWS will transport the relief items from Saga, Japan to Shanghai, China through Spring Airlines. After arriving in Shanghai, ARROWS will deliver those items to Fudan University Hospital and other hospitals in Wuhan and Shanghai through partner organizations, the International Health Welfare Institute (IHWI) and Rum Union.

On January 27, ARROWS dispatched a Chinese staff member to Shanghai to conduct a needs assessment. On January 30, Rum Union and ARROWS delivered 1,680 N95 masks and 1,900 medical gloves to Changhai Hospital in Shanghai. Currently, medical supplies are prioritized to Wuhan so the hospital was running out of supplies. The hospital director smiled and said, "Please send our gratitude to the people of Japan. Thank you very much!"

The ARROWS staff member visited pharmacies in Shanghai and surveyed medical supply inventories. The pharmacies are running low on masks and disinfectants and there is a high demand for medical supplies.
The Chinese government has shut down more than 90% of restaurants in Shanghai, and there is also a high possibility that convenience stores and supermarkets will be closed starting January 31.

The relief items to be transported on January 31 were a part of a stockpile stored at Saga Airport by A-PAD to take measures against infectious diseases. A-PAD plans to distribute relief items from the stockpile as needed.

Two ARROWS doctors based in Japan continue to design assessment contents and analyze assessment data. ARROWS is carrying out the assistance activities with strict hygiene management to avoid infection. Before and after each trip to China, the doctors brief the ARROWS staff on the characteristics of the virus, transmission routes, mortality rates, and measures to take in case of suspected infections. The team is also closely monitoring the security situation on the ground. ARROWS will carefully monitor the physical conditions of our staff members when they return to Japan and is taking all precautions to avoid spreading infections.

Global efforts are needed to stop the pneumonia epidemic caused by the virus and to save as many lives as possible. Thank you for your generous support.
