ARROWS Medical Team Assists Cruise Ship in Nagasaki

Inside an Italian cruise ship, Costa Atlantica, docked at a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. plant in Nagasaki, COVID-19 has spread among crew members. On April 28, at the request of Nagasaki Prefecture, Airborne Rescue & Relief Operations With Search (ARROWS), comprised of Civic Force and partner organiations, sent a medical team of five members to Nagasaki.

As of April 27, there were 148 confirmed cases on the ship. If the number of critically ill patients with COVID-19 increases, Nagasaki is not equipped with enough beds and communities are raising their concerns. There is not enough 24-hour medical support available on board and there is a serious risk of growing cluster infection.

On April 28, the team, led by the ARROWS' project leader, Dr. Mototaka Inaba, arrived in Nagasaki and discussed action plans with the ship operator and the Nagasaki Prefectural Disaster Management Assistance Team (DMAT). ARROWS will provide medical consultations for patients with suspected or confirmed infections at a triage post set up outside of the ship. ARROWS will also provide medical assistance during the night and patient transfer operations in case of severe cases.
