Disaster Affected Areas Overcome COVID-19 Challenges

"Six months since Typhoon No.19 (Hagibis) hit us...recovery has just begun..."

"Facing invisible fears and living with stress piling up, this situation is very similar to what we experienced right after the disaster."

"We can act now to fight COVID-19 with our experiences and networks built through disaster recovery."

These are some feedback Civic Force received from disaster affected areas across Japan.

Since its establishment in 2009 as a disaster assistance organization, Civic Force partnered with 70 organizations across Japan to support disaster assistance including the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, 2016 Kumamoto earthquake, 2018 West Japan floods, 2018 Hokkaido earthquake, and Typhoon Hagibis in 2019. Through NPO Partner Projects, Civic Force has supported various activities focusing on disaster recovery and rehabilitation. Many of those disaster affected areas have been hit hard by COVID-19 and relief measures are urgently needed.

In some communities that overcame disasters in the past, people are taking initiatives to fight against COVID-19. In Iwate and Miyagi Prefectures, which experienced the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami in 2011 and Typhoon Hagibis in 2019, there is an NPO providing safe spaces for children and parents who are out of school or furloughed because of COVID-19 concerns.  In Hokkaido, an education project kick started to provide play and study spaces for children who have to stay home. In affected areas of the Kumamoto earthquake and Northern Kyushu heavy rain, there are activities for disaster risk reduction in anticipation of the rainy season, prevention of infectious diseases, and victim protections from domestic violence and crimes. Those activities are carefully implemented while ensuring physical distancing.

Civic Force has opened a new donation page to support those disaster affected areas. Building on networks and knowledge of disaster assistance, Civic Force will support activities that are implemented by local partners. Activity details will be available soon. Thank you once again for your generous support to prevent secondary damages from COVID-19.
