The magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck southern Turkey on February 6, 2023 has caused enormous destruction across Turkey and Syria. At the request of Turkey-based NGO, GEA, a partner organization, A-PAD dispatched a search and rescue specialist to join their rescue operations.

Since its establishment in 1994, GEA has been providing emergency assistance across the world. GEA is a member of UN’s International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG).

On February 6, nearly 300 members of GEA arrived in the affected areas to conduct search and rescue operations. As of February 9, GEA has rescued 39 survivors from the rubble and the last person was rescued 88 hours after the disaster.

“We appreciate your support all the way from Japan. This is one of the hardest operations. We are doing the best we can,” said GEA”s director.

On February 10, over 20,000 deaths have been confirmed and the number is rising.
