Landslides and flooding caused by heavy rains are reported one after another in northern Kyushu. On July 10, three staff members from the Civic Force Saga office received a request for assistance and delivered five portable toilets and 4,000 disposable toilet sets to a hospital in Kurume City, Fukuoka Prefecture.

The hospital was partially flooded on the first floor and submerged several dozen centimeters above the floor. 50 patients on the first floor evacuated to the second floor.

While ARROWS conducted needs assessments in Kurume, the hospital made an assistance request for toilets and hand washing due to water outage. Civic Force delivered portable and disposable toilet sets that were available at the emergency warehouse in Saga. Hospital staff were relieved and said “Thank you so much. This is very helpful.”

The disposable toilet set delivered to the hospital is made in Japan and contains a bacterial coagulant, a defecation storage bag, tissues, and a large bag for collection. Even when the water supply is stopped, the toilet room can be used immediately by using simple portable toilets and Western-style toilets in existing facilities. Instead of waiting for days for a temporary toilet to be constructed, the toilet room is clean and privacy is protected, and it can ensure a comfortable sanitary environment.

The coagulant has excellent initial antibacterial and sustained antibacterial effects against bacteria that cause infections, such as Escherichia coli, ammonia-producing bacteria, salmonella, and Staphylococcus aureus.
