On April 22, 2026, a massive forest fire broke out in Otsuchi Town, Iwate Prefecture. The fire continued to spread throughout the second day and as of 6:00 AM, approximately 200 hectares have burned. Following a request for disaster relief, the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) joined the effort, conducting aerial firefighting operations via helicopter. However, there is no immediate prospect of containing the blaze.
In response, Otsuchi Town issued evacuation orders for more than 1,884 residents (900 households) across Otsuchi. As of 6:00 AM, April 23 local time, 219 people are staying at three evacuation centers.
With further damage expected, Civic Force dispatched staff from neighboring Miyagi Prefecture today to begin assessing the damage and surveying needs both inside and outside the evacuation centers. Based on the situation on the ground, the team plans to provide emergency relief assistance including the distribution of supplies and evacuation center assistance, in cooperation with other aid organizations including ARROWS (Airborne Rescue & Relief Operations With Search).
