【Iwate Wildfire】Relief Items Delivered to Evacuation Centers

On March 2, Civic Force staff delivered 11 boxes of oranges, four boxes of masks, and vegetable juice to the Sanriku Community Center in Sanriku-cho Ayasato where nearly 300 people have fled to safety. Civic Force also delivered ten boxes of oranges and four boxes of masks to Okirai Elementary School where approximately 250 people have evacuated.

Additionally, Civic Force shipped socks and eco-bags that had been stored in a warehouse in Saga, Kyushu. Once the shipment reaches the disaster area, Civic Force plans to deliver them to evacuation centers and other locations.

Meals for residents staying at evacuation centers have been provided by restaurant associations. As the fire continues to spread and evacuations are expected to be prolonged, Civic Force will continue to provide support such as creating healthy conditions and supporting infection control measures.

Efforts are being made to extinguish the forest fire in Ofunato City from the air and on the ground, but as of March 1, the affected area has expanded from approximately 4.6 square miles to 5.4 square miles. The fire is likely spreading due to the dry air and strong winds, and although the flames have been contained in some areas, it is still unclear whether the fire will be completely extinguished. The city has issued evacuation orders for 333 people in 141 households, and more than 1,000 people spent time in evacuation centers this weekend. Additionally, more than 2,000 people have evacuated to the homes of acquaintances and relatives.
