In August 2025, record-breaking heavy rains occurred primarily over Kagoshima, Kumamoto, Fukuoka, and Yamaguchi Prefectures, causing a series of landslides and flooding. In Kumamoto Prefecture, cleanup work is underway in houses and as of August 15, 10 evacuation centers are open in the prefecture.

On August 15, Civic Force dispatched two staff from Saga to Kumamoto. They visited the Disaster Volunteer Center in Amakusa City and the Social Welfare Council in Kamiamakusa City to conduct a needs assessment.

Situation in Amakusa City In Amakusa City, Gionbashi, a national cultural property, and the central shopping district were damaged. Over 100 homes suffered above-floor flooding and nearly 600 homes suffered under-floor flooding. Since August 14, the Disaster Volunteer Center has been opened and volunteer-led recovery activities, such as the removal of household goods, tatami mats, and mud, have begun.

Situation in Kamiamakusa City In Kamiamakusa City, this heavy rain has caused above-floor flooding in over 350 homes, the highest number of damages confirmed among the municipalities in the prefecture. Matsushima Town suffered widespread flooding with some areas submerged up to 1.4 meters. Support activities by the Disaster Volunteer Center are scheduled to begin on August 18 and preparations are underway.

In Oyanomachi, Civic Force staff helped unload 5,000 pieces of equipment and materials that arrived in the afternoon.
