【Shizuoka Tornado Support】One Month Since the Disaster: Hearing About Needed Assistance

On September 5, 2025, Shizuoka Prefecture experienced a succession of gales due to Typhoon 15, including one of the largest tornadoes ever recorded in Japan. Makihara City and Yoshida Town suffered extensive damage with many building roofs and other structures being blown off. According to Shizuoka Prefecture, as of October 14, there were 369 buildings completely or severely destroyed and 1,784 partially damaged, with one fatality and 83 people seriously or lightly injured.

Many foreign nationals reside in Makinohara City and Yoshida Town. Civic Force coordinated the dispatch of volunteer interpreters and other support for foreign victims lacking Japanese proficiency.

About one month after the tornado struck, on October 6 and 7, two staff members were once again dispatched to Makinohara City, Shizuoka Prefecture. They held discussions with relevant parties regarding future support efforts. They visited the Makinohara City Housing Division and Crisis Management Division, as well as evacuation centers, to determine the needed support.
The staff member who visited the disaster area reported on the local situation, saying, "Some of the blue sheets covering damaged houses are sagging, which could lead to further issues if another typhoon hits. However, repairs have started on houses that were untouched during our previous visit giving the impression that recovery is gradually progressing.

Civic Force will continue to collect information on the affected areas and support the recovery efforts going forward.
