14 Years Since 3.11: What We Can Do Now

Today marks 14 years since the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011 (“3.11”). The disaster-stricken areas of Tohoku, which suffered immense damage, have seen progress and the appearance of the towns has changed significantly. On the other hand, the fire has finally been extinguished in Ofunato City, Iwate Prefecture, but over 200 buildings were damaged and those who were affected by the 3.11 disaster were forced to evacuate again.

Furthermore, in Fukushima Prefecture, where the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant occurred, approximately 165,000 people were evacuated within and outside the prefecture. While decontamination and other efforts have progressed and evacuation orders have been lifted in many areas, more than 25,000 people are still living as evacuees. The government is promoting decontamination, infrastructure development, and industrial revitalization aiming to return all those who wish to do so. Unfortunately, there are many challenges including the decommissioning of the plant and population decline.

Through Civic Force's NPO Partner Projects, we continue to support initiatives that encourage the recovery of disaster-stricken areas together with the younger generation who will lead the future. We also plan to begin collaborative projects with organizations working in Okuma Town, Fukushima Prefecture, designated as a difficult-to-return zone, and NPOs based in Otsuchi Town, Iwate Prefecture, that are engaged in passing on the lessons learned. Details will be published on our website soon.
