【Noto Peninsula Earthquake】 Online Workshop to Connect Affected Residents

Many evacuees are feeling anxious about securing housing and prolonging evacuation life. On February 17, Civic Force hosted an online workshop to connect 20 participants in Suzu City and Ishinomaki City who was impacted by the Great East Japan Earthquake.

Sharing the hardships and lessons learned

Seven participants from Ishinomaki shared what it was like at the time of the disaster, what it was like to live as an evacuee afterward, and the hardships and lessons learned while rebuilding their lives.

Life after a disaster differs from person to person - some were forced to move multiple times from evacuation centers near their disaster-stricken homes to temporary housing and then to reconstruction housing. Others renovated and rebuilt their damaged homes after the disaster without dismantling them. There were also those that returned to Ishinomaki after evacuating outside the prefecture.

People affected by the disaster in Suzu City shared their current situation and concerns. “I have evacuated outside the prefecture, but I am unsure if I will be able to return due to limited information.'' “I am forced to make a difficult decision whether to rebuild my home or move into temporary housing.''

This workshop was planned by the GAIA Recovery Support Project, which continues to support Suzu City, BIG UP, an organization in Ishinomaki, and Civic Force. Civic Force plans to continue hosting these events in the future.

“Although each person's disaster situation is different, I think that listening to the stories of those who have a similar experience will help objectively view one’s own situation and give the opportunity to take a step forward. I would like to find out what I can do for the people of Noto while leveraging my experience supporting the recovery and reconstruction efforts in Ishinomaki,” said Takuma Tagami, Program Coordinator at Civic Force.

Civic Force will continue to leverage its experience from the Great East Japan Earthquake to actively provide opportunities to connect disaster-affected areas.
